Guru Purnima: The Greatest Gurus Are the Ones Who Helped Us Become Who We Are
Before We Bow to the World, Let Us Bow to Those Who Taught Us to Stand - Our Parents, Teachers, and Every Soul Who Became Our Guru

"Before life taught us its lessons, our parents and teachers quietly taught us how to live."
Who taught you your first word?
Who held your tiny fingers when you learned to walk?
Who stayed awake when you were sick, corrected your mistakes, and quietly celebrated your victories?
Before we thank the world for what we have become, perhaps we should first thank those who made us capable of becoming anything at all.
This Guru Purnima, instead of asking, "What did I not receive?" let us ask, "How much have I already received that I often take for granted?"
Because gratitude begins not by counting what is missing but by recognising what has always been present.
Who Is a Guru?
The Sanskrit word Guru beautifully means "the one who removes darkness and leads us towards light."
A guru is not just someone who teaches a subject. A guru is anyone who helps us understand life better.
Sometimes it is a teacher.
Sometimes it is a parent.
Sometimes it is an experience.
Our tradition beautifully says,
"Varṇa mātraṁ kalisidātam guru."
Even the person who teaches us a single letter deserves our respect, because every lesson shapes our journey.
Our First Gurus Never Held a Chalk
Before any teacher called our name in school, someone else had already begun teaching us.
Our parents.
They taught us to smile before we knew language.
To walk after countless falls.
To speak our first words.
To say, "thank you."
To respect others.
To apologize.
To care.
There was no classroom.
No examinations.
No certificates.
Only unconditional love, endless patience, and countless silent sacrifices.
Many of us remember what our parents could not give us.
But how often do we pause to remember everything they did?
The food they skipped.
The dreams they postponed.
The comforts they sacrificed.
The worries they silently carried.
Psychologists often say that a child's emotional foundation is built long before formal education begins. The love, security, encouragement, and values received at home become the invisible roots that support a person throughout life.
Perhaps gratitude begins when we stop asking,
"Why didn't I get everything?"
and start saying,
"Thank you for giving me everything you possibly could."
Dronacharya and Ekalavya: The Power of Respect for Learning
The story of Dronacharya and Ekalavya is remembered not only for sacrifice but also for devotion to learning.
Though denied formal education, Ekalavya never allowed rejection to become bitterness. He honoured his guru, practised with discipline, and became an exceptional archer.
Whether we agree with every part of the story or not, one truth remains timeless:
A grateful learner never stops growing.
Lord Krishna: The Guru Who Gave Clarity
On the battlefield of Kurukshetra, Arjuna did not need another weapon.
He needed clarity.
Lord Krishna did not simply give instructions. He listened, guided, and helped Arjuna discover the strength already within him.
That is the role of a true guru.
Not merely to give answers, but to awaken wisdom.
Every Teacher Leaves an Invisible Mark
Most of us still remember one teacher whose words changed our confidence, direction, or attitude.
A true teacher teaches far beyond textbooks.
They nurture discipline, integrity, courage, kindness, and hope.
As life moves forward, we discover many more gurus - a friend, a colleague, a child, a failure, or even a painful experience. Every meaningful lesson makes us a little wiser.
Gratitude Is the Greatest Lesson
Psychology tells us that grateful people are happier, emotionally stronger, and more open to learning.
Gratitude doesn't erase difficulties.
It reminds us that we never walked alone.
This Guru Purnima, call your parents.
Thank your teachers.
Remember those who shaped your life.
A sincere "Thank you" is often the most precious gift we can offer.
Final Thought:
On this Guru Purnima, I bow my head with gratitude to my parents - my first gurus - and to every teacher, mentor, friend, and life experience that helped shape who I am today.
For in our tradition,
"Even the one who teaches us a single letter is a Guru."
Knowledge may build our career.
But gratitude builds our character.
May we never become so successful that we forget those who first showed us the path.
Reflection
Before you leave this page, pause for a moment.
